We’ve been Izzard fans since…hell…almost 10 years ago is it? Back when Matty and I were in college and DtK was all over HBO. Good times. We’ve carried his words with us all this time through moves and our ups and downs, and Eddie has always made us smile.
So we’ve wanted to see him live forever but the timing never worked before now. Luckily we bought these tickets back in March via presale on eddieizzard.com. The seats turned out to be excellent! We were about 9 rows back and could see the whole show so clearly.
But I’m getting ahead of myself. We got into Seattle around 5:30 and parked near the Paramount. We headed to the secret spot, the same place where we met Lewis Black, and hoped luck would be with us again.
Since it was so early we took a quick survey around and headed across the street to Bambuza to get some food (and drinks!). Dinner was excellent but I couldn’t focus – I was so afraid we’d miss him.
So after a speedy dinner consisting of ginger chicken, honey glazed chicken and rice, and 2x tall rum and cokes we headed back to our hangout.
About 40 minutes later a slender figure in a baseball cap walked by. Matty said “is it…” and I just sat there, unable to move. Luckily the roadie stopped him to chat and in that moment my wonderful husband walked over and asked him if we could get a photo
If it hadn’t been for the roadie or Matty being able to speak when I couldn’t…well I would have regretted that moment forever.
He stopped inside the door and motioned for us to come over. He removed his cap and tousled his hair (he’d been walking quite a bit in the hot summer sun it seemed) and joked that he hoped he looked okay. We said he looked great, lol. Another roadie took my camera and snapped the shot. Matty shook his hand, as did I, and we took the moment to tell him how much we adored his work. I said “have a great set tonight” and then he looked me in the eyes, smiled, and disappeared inside.
I must have asked for the camera 20 times afterward just to look at our photo. It was definitely one of those moments we’ll never forget.
So we headed inside for the show. I bought a Cake or Death coffee mug and off we went to find our glorious seats. He was funny and charming. I took photos with my big camera until security came by and said “no photos” which was dumb – the sign on the front door said no flash photography and I had the flash firmly in the off position. But whatever. We sat back and enjoyed the show. I’ll just say I’ll never watch tennis quite the same again.
After it was over we’d hoped to perhaps get an autograph (because in my moment I had no foresight to bring out the Sharpie and DtK DVD in my camera bag…) but Eddie said he was tired and would do a Q&A instead.
All in all it was worth every moment and dollar spent to get there last night. I’m still so thrilled we got to meet him and shake his hand!
